CIP vs. COP: two ways to clean a food line
Sanitary cleaning is not one method. Clean-in-place (CIP) circulates cleaning solutions through fixed equipment without disassembly, while clean-out-of-place (COP) removes parts and cleans them in a dedicated wash station. Most plants use both, and the piping and equipment have to be designed to suit the method. The table below compares them.

- 3-A Sanitary Standards
- Voluntary design standards for equipment and systems used with milk, dairy, and other food products. They specify cleanable materials, surface finishes, self-draining geometry, and crevice-free construction so equipment can be reliably cleaned and inspected. We build sanitary piping and equipment to 3-A hygienic-design principles.
- FDA & FSMA
- The FDA regulates food safety, and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) shifted the focus to preventing contamination. Under FSMA preventive-controls rules, equipment and sanitation are part of a plant’s hazard-based food-safety plan — cleanable, well-documented process systems support those preventive controls.
