York chiller repair is the diagnosis, repair and overhaul of York centrifugal, screw and scroll machines, from the oil system and bearings to the tubes, drive and panel; Paul Industries services these chillers and replaces them when that is the better call, along with the chilled water, condenser water and glycol piping around them, in all 50 states with same-day emergency response. For the general repair framework across every make, see our chiller repair page.
York chiller repair starts with the family on the nameplate
The model family tells a technician which compressor, lubrication method, refrigerant pressure class and control logic the machine uses, so it sets the whole repair plan before a panel is opened. A York chiller can be a low-pressure centrifugal with a purge, an oil-free magnetic bearing machine or a sealed scroll package, and almost nothing about their failure modes carries across. The capacities below are published ranges for recent generations; older machines may differ, and the rating sheet for the unit governs.
| Family | Type and compressor | Published range | Typical service issues |
|---|---|---|---|
| YK | Water-cooled, single-stage centrifugal, gear driven, open motor on published Style G builds | 250 to 3,000 tons | Oil pump and return, thrust clearance, vane linkage, tube fouling, starter or drive coolant |

How to read a York chiller model number
The string on a York nameplate is a set of codes for the model, shells, compressor, power supply, motor and design level, and on most families it does not state tons directly. The string is on the nameplate and usually on the panel. Correct codes matter because parts, clearances, relief settings and service limits all follow them: one published YK generation lists evaporator relief valves at about 180 psig on H and K compressors and about 235 psig on P and Q compressors.
| Position on a YK string | Example YK KC K4 H9 – CY G | Example YK ER ER Q7 5 CS G S | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model | YK | YK | Sets the family and control logic |
| Evaporator code | KC | ER | Shell size, tube count, pass and pressure drop data |
| Condenser code | K4 | ER | Tube bundle, waterbox and cleaning access |
| Compressor code | H9 | Q7 | Gears, bearings, service limits and rigging weight |
| Power supply | Dash, 60 Hz | 5, 50 Hz | Motor speed, gear set and drive selection |
| Motor code | CY | CS | Frame, horsepower and starter match |
| Design level | G | G | Which generation of hardware and panel applies |
Other families use their own logic. On a YMC2 the digits after the compressor letter are capacity in kilowatts, so S1495 is about 425 tons. A YLAA string such as YLAA0125HE46X breaks down as YL for York chiller, A for air cooled, A for the design series, a four-digit unit number, S or H for standard or high efficiency, E for R-410A or J for R-454B, and a voltage code where 46 means 460 volt, three phase, 60 Hz. Photograph the nameplate before calling for service.
Inside York centrifugal chillers: oil, bearings, vanes and tubes
Oil-lubricated York centrifugals depend on a pressurized oil system that runs before start, throughout operation and during coastdown, so lubrication faults are the first thing to rule in or out. The York YK chiller is the clearest example.
| Subsystem | What the hardware is | What goes wrong | Repair work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil pump and reservoir | Variable speed submersible pump and 3,000 watt immersion heater in a reservoir separate from the compressor, plus a gravity tank for coastdown after a power failure | Rising pump speed, low or high differential pressure, refrigerant-diluted oil, failed heater | Filter and oil change, pump and pump drive repair, heater replacement, transducer checks |
| Oil return and eductor | High-pressure condenser gas drives an eductor that draws oil-rich liquid from the evaporator through a dehydrator back to the sump | Plugged eductor nozzle, spent dehydrator, closed stop valves, falling sump level with a steady charge | Nozzle cleaning, filter and drier replacement, proving return flow at low and high load |
| Filter and oil cooler | Half-micron cartridge filter with service valves; refrigerant-cooled oil cooler on standard builds | Loaded filter, high oil temperature, metal in the element | Element replacement and inspection, cooler and temperature valve service, lab analysis |
| Bearings and gears | Insert-type aluminum alloy journal and thrust bearings; single helical crowned gears, each in its own bearings | Aluminum particles in the filter, growing thrust end-play, vibration, proximity probe alarms on equipped machines | End-play measurement, vibration analysis, teardown and bearing replacement |
| Pre-rotation vanes | Cast manganese-bronze airfoil vanes moved by an electric actuator through solid linkage | Stuck or slipping linkage, failed actuator, lost calibration, hunting leaving water temperature | Actuator and linkage repair, calibration, load test from low load to full |
| Open motor and coupling | Air-cooled open motor on a cast iron adaptor, flexible disc coupling with no lubrication | Falling insulation resistance, bearing wear, shaft seal seepage, current imbalance | Megohm trending, motor lubrication, seal and coupling work, motor rewind or replacement |
| Shells and tubes | Flooded evaporator, condenser with subcooler, copper alloy skip-fin tubes roller expanded and individually replaceable | Rising small temperature difference, scale, pitting, wear at supports | Soft brush cleaning, eddy current testing, plugging or retubing, gasket and waterbox work |
The open motor shapes the worst-case repair. Refrigerant never touches an air-cooled motor, so a winding failure stays a motor job rather than contaminating the whole charge, which is a very different event from a hermetic burnout cleanup. On the oil side, trend the logged oil pump motor speed along with differential pressure: a pump working harder to hold the same pressure usually means filter loading or growing bearing clearance, and an element holding aluminum flakes moves bearing wear to the top of the list. Tube work should stay gentle: a steel brush can damage the tubes, and soft brushing comes before any acid cleaning.
The York MaxE centrifugal chiller name
MaxE is a product name that appears on YK, YD and steam-turbine YST literature and panels from that period. The nameplate string, not the badge, decides which compressor and panel notes apply.
The YT York chiller and its purge
A YT runs R-123 or, on the oldest units, R-11, and its evaporator sits below atmospheric pressure, so leaks pull air and moisture in instead of pushing refrigerant out. Its Turboguard purge runs continuously, removing non-condensable gas from the top of the condenser, and an excess purge warning means air is getting in and a leak check is due. The published YT routine is tighter than the YK table further down: change the purge dehydrator at least quarterly, sample oil quarterly, change the filter element twice a year and renew sump oil annually. If the oil heater has been off, it needs 12 hours before a start, and the panel holds the start until oil reaches 71 degrees Fahrenheit. Supply belongs in the plan as well, since new HCFC-123 for servicing ends in 2030.
The York YD chiller
The YD puts two centrifugal compressors in parallel on one set of shells to reach capacities up to 6,000 tons. Log and trend each driveline as its own machine, because a single set of leaving water numbers can hide one compressor drifting while its partner carries the difference. Shell work affects both drivelines, so tube cleaning and eddy current testing belong in a planned window; our shutdown and turnaround crews schedule that work around the plant’s load.
The York chiller YMC2 and magnetic bearings
The YMC2 eliminates oil altogether: a hermetic, high-speed permanent magnet motor floats on active magnetic bearings, with radial and thrust cartridges, refrigerant cooling for the motor and rolling element bearings kept only for emergency touchdown. A reserve energy supply keeps the bearings levitated through coastdown after a power failure. Repair therefore shifts from oil and gears to bearing control, drive health and sensors, with the same tube and leak work as any water-cooled machine. Touchdown events deserve a record, because they consume the life of the backup bearings. Our data center chillers page covers redundant plants built on machines like this.
York chiller VSD options on centrifugal machines
The drive varies compressor speed through frequency and voltage, and its capacity logic positions speed and the pre-rotation vanes independently for the best part-load efficiency. Published ratings for the YK OptiSpeed drive show power factor at 0.95 or better across the load range. Service covers coolant, heat exchanger, air filters, connections and fault history. Because the drive and vanes work together, an uncalibrated vane position can force a drive to fixed full speed until calibration is done.
York chiller screw compressor repair on YVAA, YCIV and water-cooled machines
A York screw machine loads and unloads through speed or a slide valve, moves oil by pressure difference on current air-cooled designs, and needs its refrigerant feed, drive and oil management checked as closely as its rotors. Water-cooled YR machines carry a slide valve, and their panels report it as uncalibrated when position is lost; newer variable speed designs removed it.
On a York chiller YCIV, a dedicated inverter drives each semi-hermetic twin screw, giving capacity control down to 10, 7.5 or 5 percent on two, three or four compressor units. The circuit uses a flash tank economizer: a slow feed valve holds tank level at about 35 percent, and a fast drain valve meters refrigerant to the evaporator on suction superheat. The sight glass reads about 32, 35 and 38 percent at its bottom, middle and top, which allows a direct sensor check. A sensor reading more than about 10 points high can leave the tank empty while the panel thinks it has liquid, so test the sensor before condemning either valve.
A York chiller YVAA uses differential pressure to move oil, with no mechanical oil pump, plus a variable volume ratio that matches compression to conditions. Its completely sealed VSD is liquid cooled, and the manufacturer calls for replacing that glycol every five years. Microchannel coils should be rinsed with care and inspected for corrosion in harsh air. An optional quick start can return the compressors in about 34 seconds after power is restored.
Water-cooled screw and heat recovery options
A York water cooled chiller in the screw range, such as the YVWA, adds condenser tubes, tower water and an eductor to the list, and its published safeties include eductor clog and low discharge or economizer superheat. A York heat recovery chiller uses two separate water circuits in the condenser, one for the tower and one for the heating loop, so a fault can sit in either circuit and both need flow, strainers and treatment reviewed. On the YLAA, an optional partial condenser between compressor discharge and coils can recover up to 85 percent of rejected heat at temperatures as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
Air-cooled scroll service on YLAA and YCAL units
The YLAA York chiller and its smaller relative are packaged units whose hermetic scroll compressors are replaced whole, so repair centers on finding what killed the compressor, protecting its partners and keeping the circuit clean. Crankcase heaters guard against liquid migration, and a dead heater followed by a cold start is a known way to lose one.
On brazed plate YLAA models, a 40 mesh wye strainer protects the 316L stainless evaporator and a flow switch sits at the outlet, so a plugged strainer is often the real cause of a flow trip. Thermostatic expansion valves are standard, with electronic valves on the low-temperature glycol option, which is required for any leaving temperature below 30 degrees Fahrenheit and reaches as low as 10. Microchannel condensers tolerate a clear water rinse up to 100 psi. The YCAL York chiller, a smaller self-contained package on R-410A, gets the same logic at a smaller scale. For loops on these machines, our glycol cooling systems page covers concentration and piping.
Reading the York chiller control panel
The panel on centrifugal machines is the OptiView center, a color display with soft keys that shows live values, trends and shutdown history, and its status line tells you what kind of stop occurred. A cycling shutdown restarts by itself when the condition clears, while a safety shutdown needs a manual restart after the cause is gone. A machine that keeps cycling is often reporting flow or load; a safety trip more often points inside the machine.
Pull the history detail before resetting anything, because it records operating parameters at the moment of the selected shutdown, and that record often settles the diagnosis. Air-cooled screw and scroll panels use a keypad and system-numbered messages instead: on a YCIV most faults restart after a 120-second anti-recycle timer, and a third trip within 90 minutes requires a manual reset. Safeties stay in the circuit throughout any repair; repeated resets without a found cause are how a small fault becomes a compressor job.
York chiller troubleshooting guide: what common messages point to
The notes below cover the messages owners ask about often, and each is a pointer to a cause rather than a repair in itself. Exact wording and limits vary by model and panel generation, so treat these as general guidance and confirm against the machine’s own values.
York chiller flow switch open
This message means the panel lost proof of water flow, and on OptiView centrifugals it is a cycling stop that clears by itself when flow returns. The chilled liquid check on a YT trips after two continuous seconds open, while the condenser check is ignored for the first 30 seconds of a run; a YCIV uses a one-second delay. Start outside the machine with the pump, its starter, closed valves, strainers and air in the loop. Many YK units carry thermal switches in the nozzles, which sense flow through the cooling effect on a small heated probe, so a fouled probe or bad wiring can open the circuit with water flowing normally. Confirm actual flow with pressure drop before replacing the switch.
York chiller suction limiting
This means the controls are holding back load or unloading a compressor because suction pressure has reached its programmed limit, which keeps the system online rather than tripping it. Air-cooled screw panels display it per system, as in SYS 1 suction pressure limiting. Common causes are low evaporator flow, low charge, a fouled evaporator and an empty flash tank. A published quick check for low flow on YCIV machines runs one compressor fully loaded: more than 8 degrees Fahrenheit across the evaporator on a two-compressor unit is suspect, more than 5.3 on three and more than 4 on four. For charge, look for a solid liquid column in the sight glass and liquid line subcooling near 7 to 12 degrees on a 95 degree day. A system that limits without speeding up may have a level sensor reading high. Brief limiting right after a pump-down can be normal.
Low discharge superheat: York chiller screw circuits
Low discharge superheat means the gas leaving the compressor is too close to saturation, which signals liquid refrigerant reaching the compressor and diluting its oil. On a YCIV the cutout acts when discharge superheat stays under 10 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes, after a five-minute grace period at start, and it mainly guards against floodback through the economizer line when the flash tank level runs high. The usual suspects are a level sensor reading low or erratic, a feed valve passing liquid, a drain valve out of step, a bad thermistor or transducer and an overcharge. Compare the sight glass with the displayed level, then verify the discharge temperature and pressure sensors with independent instruments.
York chiller no cool load
This is a status, not a fault: air-cooled panels report a no cooling load condition when leaving liquid is already at or below setpoint, so the compressors have no call to run. If the process or building is warm while that status holds, the machine is being misled. Check the leaving liquid sensor against a calibrated thermometer, the setpoint and any remote reset signal, then look for flow bypassing the load through a three-way valve, an open decoupler or a passing bypass. On centrifugal machines the matching message is a low leaving temperature cycling stop, which restarts at a programmed setpoint and follows the same checks.
| Message or symptom | What it usually points to | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Oil low differential pressure | Loaded filter, diluted or foaming oil, weak pump, worn bearings; YT limit is under 15 psid running | Sump level, heater, filter drop, oil sample, pump speed trend |
| Oil high temperature | Failed cooling path or temperature valve; YT limit is over 180 degrees Fahrenheit | Oil cooler feed, thermistor, condenser conditions |
| Vanes uncalibrated | Vane position calibration not done or lost after panel or actuator work | Actuator, potentiometer and linkage, then calibration |
| Evaporator low pressure, smart freeze | Low flow, low charge, level control fault, sensor drift | Flow, evaporator sight glass, approach, transducer |
| Thrust bearing proximity probe alarm | Real axial movement or probe and wiring fault | Stop and measure end-play before any restart decision |
York chiller preventive maintenance schedule
The schedule follows the manufacturer’s requirement table for the family, and the YK table below is a sound template for oil-lubricated centrifugal machines. Keep the logs and service records, because the published requirement expects the owner to hold them on file as proof of maintenance for warranty purposes.
| Interval | YK tasks in the published table |
|---|---|
| Daily | Record operating conditions on the log, check oil level |
| Weekly | Check refrigerant level |
| Monthly | Check oil return operation, motor starter, sump heater and thermostat, three-phase voltage and current balance, safety controls and calibration, condenser and evaporator flows; leak check and repair |
| Yearly | Tighten electrical connections, megohm the motor, replace oil filter and oil return filter and driers, clean or backflush the starter or drive heat exchanger, replace starter coolant, service starter air filters, analyze oil and refrigerant, analyze vibration, clean tubes, check low speed shaft thrust end-play |
| Every two to five years | Eddy current testing and tube inspection |
| Per oil and motor requirements | Compressor oil change and motor lubrication at the published intervals, guided by the analysis results |
York chiller maintenance checklist by family
The checklist changes with the hardware, so copy the YK table only where the hardware matches.
| Family | Add to the routine | Remove or reduce |
|---|---|---|
| YT | Purge run log, quarterly dehydrator and oil sample, leak test weighted toward air ingress | Longer oil intervals from the YK table |
| YD | Separate readings, oil samples and vibration for each compressor | Shell tasks done once, with both drivelines down |
| YMC2 | Bearing and drive fault history, drive cooling, touchdown record | All oil, filter, heater and oil return tasks |
| YVAA | Coil rinse and corrosion check, fan inspection, drive glycol every five years, separator and oil level review | Tube cleaning on the condenser side |
| YCIV | Flash tank level against sight glass, subcooling, inverter and panel cooling checks, coil rinse | Tube cleaning on the condenser side |
| YLAA, YCAL | Crankcase heaters, strainer, flow switch, coil rinse, compressor amp balance | Oil sampling and overhaul tasks on sealed compressors |
York chiller maintenance can run as a standalone route or inside a wider plant program through our preventive maintenance work and industrial maintenance services, with scope and response times fixed in one of our service contracts.
York chiller overhaul vs replacement: what decides it
A York centrifugal is usually worth overhauling when shells and tubes test sound and its refrigerant has a future, because the operating assembly comes out of the compressor and tubes are individually replaceable; a machine with a sunset refrigerant or tube damage across the bundle leans toward replacement.
| Factor | Favors overhaul or rebuild | Favors replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerant | R-134a machine with stable supply, or a plan for the next charge | YT on R-123 facing the 2030 end of new servicing supply, or a machine still on R-11 |
| Tube results | Eddy current shows isolated defects that can be plugged or replaced | Widespread thinning across a bundle, with past freeze or corrosion damage |
| Compressor findings | Bearings, seals and vanes worn but gears and housings in limits | Gear or rotor damage with long parts lead time on an older code |
| Motor and starter | Open motor with good megohm trend or a rewind option | Hermetic damage, or old starter gear also due |
| Panel and drive | OptiView era controls with supported boards | Obsolete controls and a constant-speed machine with long part-load hours, where a new variable speed unit changes the energy case |
When replacement wins, our machinery moving crews handle rigging and our hydrostatic testing covers new piping connections under ASME B31.9 or the governing code. Our process chillers page covers selecting the next machine for production duty. Mixed fleets can also use our Trane chiller repair and Carrier chiller repair pages.
How a York chiller service call runs
A service call moves from the model string and shutdown history to a proven cause, then to a repair that is tested under load, so nothing gets replaced on a guess.
| Stage | What Paul does on a York machine |
|---|---|
| Before arrival | Takes the model string, serial number, message text and last log sheets to match compressor code, panel generation and likely parts |
| On site, machine safe | Locks out and tags out, confirms the drive bus is discharged on variable speed units, checks the machinery room conditions under ASHRAE Standard 15 |
| Evidence | Records panel history and trends, then measures pressures, temperatures, flows, amps, oil condition and vibration with independent instruments |
| Root cause | Separates machine from loop by checking flow, sensors against gauges, sight glass levels and valve operation |
| Options | Sets out repair choices, outage length and temporary cooling for the owner to decide |
| Repair | Recovers refrigerant under EPA Section 608 rules, completes the mechanical, electrical or controls work |
| Proof | Leak tests, evacuates and charges by the machine’s published method, recalibrates vanes or sensors, runs under load until readings settle |
| Record | Leaves before and after readings, parts and refrigerant quantities for your files |
The loop around a York machine
Many York trips begin in the water, so a repair is finished only when the pumps, valves, strainers and piping around the machine are sound too. Paul repairs and replaces that equipment on the same job, across chilled water systems and any exchanger between chiller and process through our heat exchanger repair crews.

Frequently asked questions
Can an independent contractor service a York chiller?
Yes. Owners choose the contractor that maintains their York machines, and work on a unit still under warranty should be checked against the warranty terms first. Keeping complete logs and service records protects the owner either way, since the published maintenance requirement expects those records on file. Paul Industries works on this equipment as an independent contractor.
How do I find the tonnage from a York model number?
On a YK the string gives shell, compressor and motor codes rather than tons, so the selection data or rating sheet tied to the serial number gives true capacity. On a YMC2 the four digits after the compressor letter are kilowatts; divide by 3.517 to get tons. On scroll units the four-digit number indicates size but is not an exact tonnage.
What is the difference between a York YK and a York YT?
The YK is a positive-pressure centrifugal on R-134a or lower-GWP replacements, while the YT runs R-123 with an evaporator below atmospheric pressure and needs a purge unit. Both use gear-driven compressors with an open motor in their published literature, yet their leak behavior and refrigerant outlook differ completely, so maintenance routines and replacement planning differ too.
Does a York YMC2 use any oil?
Its compressor runs without oil, using magnetic bearings for radial and thrust loads, so oil changes, filters, heaters and oil return tasks disappear. Rolling element bearings stay in reserve for touchdown only. The tube, refrigerant, drive and bearing control work remains, and it benefits from the same discipline in logging and water treatment.
Why did my York chiller restart by itself after a shutdown?
It most likely stopped on a cycling shutdown, such as an open flow switch, low leaving temperature or low oil temperature, which clears and restarts automatically when the condition ends. The panel history shows the message and the readings at that moment. Repeated cycling deserves investigation even though the machine recovers on its own.
How often should York centrifugal tubes be cleaned and tested?
The published YK requirement calls for cleaning every year, sooner where water conditions demand it, with eddy current testing every two to five years. Rising small temperature difference between leaving water and saturated refrigerant is the signal to clean early. Open-tower systems with poor treatment usually land at the short end of both ranges.
How often should compressor oil be changed on a York YK?
Oil is analyzed every year and changed according to the manufacturer's oil specification, which ties change intervals to oil quality limits. The filter, oil return filter and driers are replaced annually regardless. Older YT literature calls for draining and replacing sump oil each year, with analysis quarterly because moisture enters a low-pressure machine more readily.
Which refrigerant is in a York YK?
Earlier YK machines shipped on R-134a, with R-513A added later. Current builds are offered with R-513A, R-515B or ultra-low GWP R-1234ze. The nameplate states what is in your machine, and any change of refrigerant needs an engineering review of capacity, safety classification and materials before it is planned.
What happens to a York YT when HCFC-123 supply ends?
New HCFC-123 for servicing ends in 2030, and existing machines may continue operating on recovered and reclaimed supply. Tight leak control, a recovered refrigerant inventory and a replacement plan timed to tube and compressor condition keep the machine out of a forced decision. A YT with heavy purge activity should move up the capital list.
What does an excess purge warning mean on a York YT?
It means the purge unit is handling more non-condensable gas than normal, so air is entering the low-pressure side. Moisture arrives with that air and raises acid risk in the oil and refrigerant. The response is a leak test and repair, then a dehydrator change, with purge activity trended afterward to confirm the fix held.
How quickly can a York YVAA restart after a power outage?
With the optional quick start feature, the manufacturer quotes compressor restart in about 34 seconds once power returns, and the variable speed drive allows all compressors to start together with no inrush. Without that option, normal anti-recycle timing applies. Test the sequence during a planned outage so the plant knows what to expect.
Does a York variable speed drive need coolant service?
Yes, on liquid-cooled drives. The YK table lists yearly coolant replacement and heat exchanger cleaning for drive and solid state starter applications, while the YVAA drive glycol is quoted at five-year replacement. Low coolant or a failed pump shows up as drive baseplate temperature faults, so check those before suspecting the electronics.
What does vanes uncalibrated mean on a York chiller?
It means the pre-rotation vane position calibration has not been completed, which commonly follows panel or actuator work. On a chiller with a drive, the warning can force fixed full-speed operation until calibration is done. The linkage and actuator should be checked first, because calibrating a slipping linkage only hides the mechanical fault.
What is a low suction superheat cutout on a York air-cooled screw?
It protects the compressor from liquid floodback by stopping a system when suction superheat falls too low for a set time, with thresholds that change with run time and discharge superheat on the YCIV. The likely causes sit in the drain valve, sensors and charge. It often appears alongside discharge superheat alarms, which helps narrow the search.
Are York scroll compressors rebuilt or replaced?
They are replaced as complete units, because hermetic scrolls are sealed. The job includes testing oil and the other compressors on the circuit, checking the crankcase heater, proving flow and verifying superheat and subcooling, so the same cause cannot claim the new compressor as well.
Can York air-cooled scroll chillers run on glycol?
Yes. The YLAA offers a low-temperature glycol option with electronic expansion valves, needed for any leaving temperature below 30 degrees Fahrenheit and reaching as low as 10. Glycol concentration has to match the selection, because a mix change alters both capacity and freeze protection.
How hot can a York heat recovery option make water?
The YLAA heat recovery condenser reaches as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and the YVWH-200 water-to-water heat pump is published at up to 180 degrees while also making 41 degree chilled water. Actual output depends on the concurrent cooling load, because the recovered heat exists only while the chiller is removing heat from somewhere.
How fast can a York chiller repair start?
Paul Industries responds the same day to emergencies in all 50 states. Having the model string, serial number, exact message text, last log readings and any recent work ready lets the crew arrive with the right tools and likely parts. Planned overhauls are scheduled around low load periods so spare capacity covers the outage.
